Facebook: Flammable vegetation close to homes poses a significant wildfire threat. Creating and maintaining defensible space can reduce that threat. Start by keeping the area at least 5 feet around your home noncombustible. Learn more in the guide, "Fire Adapted Communities: The Next Step in Wildfire Preparedness" below.

Facebook: Ladder fuels are vegetation that can carry a fire from low-growing plants to taller plants. Eliminating ladder fuels in and around your property is an important part of creating defensible space and reducing the wildfire threat. Learn more in our Fire Adapted Communities guide linked below.

Facebook: Home survival during wildfire is greatly influenced by the characteristics of the vegetation growing adjacent to the house. Select less flammable, high moisture plants within 30 feet from the home. These plants are difficult to ignite. If ignited, they burn more slowly and less intensly. Learn more about defensible space and plant selection in our guide, "Choosing the Right Plants for Northern Nevada's High Fire Hazard Areas," on the resources page linked below.
