Get ready to make a difference in your community with the Nevada Youth Wildfire Preparedness Challenge!

This challenge is meant to involve youth in Nevada by helping them prepare for wildfire in their local communities. Providing youth with the knowledge they need to make a difference can strengthen the bonds between organizations like us, and community members like you… plus there are prizes!

Prizes:

A panel of judges will review projects after July 15th. Prizes for each of the following age groups: Grades K-5, Grades 6-8, Grades 9-12. 

  • 1st place $1,500 
  • 2nd place $1,000 
  • 3rd place $500
  • Judges’ choice up to $1,000

Learn how to get started below!

Step 1: Form a team

Your team can be as large or as small as you want it to be – but remember that judging is based on the quality of work. For example, a group of 20 people will be expected to do more than a group of 3.

Ensure your group includes at least 1 adult to supervise activities and offer support.

If awarded, the group leader will receive the award funds on behalf of the group.  Awards can be made to an individual or an entity (such as a school district).  In order to receive the funds, the awardee/entity must register with the Nevada System of Higher Education, submit a w-9 for tax purposes. Step 2: Learn about wildfire preparedness

Step 3: Identify the wildfire preparedness needs in your community

We know that figuring out what your community needs can be difficult. We’ve created a worksheet to help you figure that out! Access the worksheet at the link below.

You can also connect with your local firefighters by reaching out to the closest station to you. They can help you figure out what the needs are in your community specifically.

Step 4: Complete your wildfire preparedness project

It’s time to act!

Make sure you document your progress along the way with before and after photos. We need to know what you’ve done.

Step 5: Submit your project by July 15th

To submit your project, use the form linked above. We’ll ask for your team details, a description of your community’s wildfire needs, what you did to help, and photos of your project.

After all projects are submitted, the judges will review how well each team identified the community’s needs. They’ll also evaluate the projects based on creativity, inclusivity, and their effectiveness in addressing those needs.
